It has been a disappointing season for the injury-riddled Columbus Blue Jackets, but that didn’t stop them from making some noise at Monday’s NHL trade deadline.

The team officially announced that it sent defenseman James Wisniewski to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for winger Rene Bourque, forward William Karlsson and a second-round pick in 2015.

This is clearly about building toward the future for a Columbus team that is virtually eliminated from playoff contention, and it netted some future assets with the draft considerations and Karlsson in return for the 31-year-old veteran.

As for the Pacific Division-leading Ducks, they are 20th in the league in goals against per game (2.7) and could certainly use the help on the defensive side. Wisniewski has postseason experience and was actually a member of the team during the 2008-09 and the 2009-10 seasons; he will bolster the depth.

He will pose as a physical presence on the back end who will help the Ducks come playoff time with his defense and formidable passing ability (21 assists on the season).
