The New Jersey Devils were able to re-sign forward Ilya Kovalchuk today for 17 years, $102 million, keeping him when it looked like he would move to the LA Kings. This can only mean one thing Devils fans: Lou Lamoriello wants to win. And he wants to win now.
Everyone knows the great Martin Brodeur can't play forever, and the Devils have been able to compete over the past few years but haven't been able to get over that hump and win the Cup. NHL experts say that Brodeur has two, maybe three years left in him—that is, of course, if he doesn't get hurt.
The Devils are a very talented team and they were able to make some moves this summer to bring in talent that made Kovalchuk feel more at home. And with a goaltender like Brodeur, they are always a threat in the Eastern Conference. Kovalchuk knows all about the Devils winning history, and he wants to be apart of that.
"He signed here for a reason—to try to win a championship," Devils coach John MacLean told NHL.com "This organization has a good history of that, so you know he wants to be part of the team. That's what I'm excited about."
