Four Players Brian Burke Should Look at Signing This Summer

No question about it, when it comes to signing unrestricted free agents, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke will have his work cut out for him this summer. Let’s face it Leaf fans, despite the Leafs admirable finish to the 2009/10 season, this team still has a ways to go before they are a playoff contender. Part of the Leafs growth is expected to come from the addition of prospect Nazem Kadri to the lineup and a healthy Mike Komisarek—other improvements will have to come from within and through the odd free agent signing. Through the first few games of the playoffs we have watched as numerous “lunchbox” players have made huge contributions to their teams. Philadelphia Flyer forwards Ian Laperiere and Daniel Carcillo are two prime examples of this, as are the likes of Matthew Lombardi (Phoenix Coyotes) and Peter Regin (Ottawa Senators). Now, the Leafs did employ a few of the lunchbox variety this season, including Colton Orr (signed through 2012/13), Wayne Primeau (UFA), Christian Hanson (RFA), and Luca Caputi (RFA 2011/12)—all of which played valuable roles this season (well, maybe not Primeau) and none of which have shown much in the w ...
