Ben Smith, Frozen Four MOP, Signs with Chicago Blackhawks

On Sunday, the Blackhawks announced that they had signed right wing, and NCAA Frozen Four MOP, Ben Smith to a two-year contract.

Smith, 21, helped Boston College win the NCAA Championship this season. BC’s alternate captain finished third on the team with 16 goals and fourth with 37 points in 42 games this season. He also led BC with five game-winning goals, including the first (and game-winning) goal in BC’s 5-0 win over Wisconsin for the National Championship. Smith also tied for fifth with 21 assists. He was the recipient of the Hockey East Len Ceglarski Sportsmanship Award.

Smith was also a member of BC’s 2008 NCAA Championship team; that season he finished second for BC with 25 goals and third with 50 points in 44 games as a sophomore. He played in all 165 games BC played while he was a member of the team, scoring 122 points (57 goals, 65 assists) and 36 penalty minutes.

Smith, who is listed at 5′11" and 207 pounds, was the Blackhawks’ fifth choice (169th overall) in the 2008 NHL Draft.
