Former Montreal Canadiens Enforcer Georges Laraque Retires

After 12 years in the NHL, enforcer Georges Laraque is calling it a career. But Laraque is not going quietly into retirement. The 33-year-old will move on and focus his life on humanitarian and environmental causes.

A few days ago, Laraque was named deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada. Laraque admits he is a political novice; however, he has focused considerable time promoting issues important to the Green Party.  

Laraque came to the attention of the Green Party through interviews, where he promoted animal rights and veganism.

Laraque will also continue his support for the rebuilding of Haiti. His main focus in this effort has been the reconstruction of the Grace Children's Hospital in Port-au-Prince.  

The decision to walk away from hockey was made easier for Laraque when he was diagnosed with two herniated discs.

"It's not worth going back to the game and running the risk of being paralyzed. I had a bunch of offers and I could have continued in the International League or in Russia, but I didn't want to take the risk."
