Big news today, as the Red Wings have signed forward Drew Miller to a one-year, $650,000 contract.
This comes as a big relief to some Wings fans, as talks of signing Mike Modano caused many to believe that Miller was possibly on the way out.
The once-Michigan State star was a big pick-up for the Red Wings during this past season, and was a vital key to their much improved penalty kill while amassing 19 points in 66 games. Many Detroit fans see a promising future with Miller wearing a winged wheel. With those reasons, I assumed keeping him would mean paying more.
I, among many others, was hoping to see Miller back for another year.
With a tight salary situation this offseason, every dollar saved is crucial. After Miller's year with Detroit, I expected (and I may have been completely wrong to think this) a new contract for him to be around $1 million a year. Although a couple hundred thousand is no large amount, the extra money could be key in signing another restricted free agent.
Whether or not this is indeed a bargain, which I believe it is, it is great to see Miller back.
