Colorado Avalanche Recall Top Prospect Kevin Shattenkirk

In light of defenseman Kyle Cumiskey's injury, the Avalanche have announced that they've recalled defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk from the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL.

Shattenkirk is considered by many to be Colorado's best prospect. He was selected 14th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and thrived playing for Boston University in the NCAA, where he scored 78 points in 121 games and was named captain as a junior in 2009-2010.

A late cut by Avalanche coach Joe Sacco in training camp, Shattenkirk has struggled in the AHL. Through 10 games, Shattenkirk has no points, with a neutral plus minus rating and 10 penalty minutes.

However, with the speed and puck moving ability lost by the Cumiskey injury, Sacco has looked past the 21 year old's struggles and will give him a chance to make an impact in the NHL.

Similar to last year, in which injuries to veteran players opened the doors to rookies like T.J. Galiardi, Brandon Yip and Ryan Wilson, the Avalanche will likely continue to take looks at players like Shattenkirk, Colby Cohen and Cameron Gaunce, as they attempt to rejuvenate their lackluster defensive corps.
