Utah Jazz Sign Raja Bell, but Won’t Match Portland’s Offer To Wesley Matthews

The Utah Jazz have signed guard Raja Bell , who was with the team from 2003-2005, to a three-year contract worth $10 million and, according to Ross Siler of the Salt Lake City Tribune , “have notified Wesley Matthews reps they won’t match [the] offer” given to him by the Portland Trail Blazers worth $34 million over five years .

Barring a failed physical by Bell, or some drastic change of heart by either the Jazz or the Blazers, the 23-year old formerly un-drafted guard will rake in the dough from the Northwest’s best.

As I have said before, I like the player, but not the terms of the contract. Unless he takes the starting role away from Nicolas Batum , which I highly doubt, the Blazers will be paying him nearly $7 million to come off the bench and play 20 or so minutes a night.

Still, with his talents, he could bring a lot to the table. From what I have seen of him, he’s a stopper on defense and, offensively, is a rim-happy version of the much-beloved former Blazer Martell Webster .
