Ubaldo Jimenez Placed on 15-day DL as Colorado Rockies Play it Safe

The Colorado Rockies decided to take the cautious route when they placed ace Ubaldo Jimenez on the DL on Wednesday with a cut on his right thumb.

It is retro-active to April 2nd so he will be eligible to return on the 17th. He likely wont miss more than 2-3 scheduled starts.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post says this injury directly effects the way Jimenez releases his fastball:

"Jimenez battled through a similar injury last year, but it wasn't to this degree. He said the first two outings this spring were the last time his thumb felt 100 percent.

The injury is of particular issue because Jimenez uses a two-seam grip on his fastball, with his thumb underneath the baseball rather than on the side. On release, the seams create friction on his thumb."

It's the beginning of April and the Rockies wanted to be as cautious as possible. No reason to force the ace to pitch through the pain.
