San Antonio Spurs: Why They Will Maintain the Lead in the Western Conference

Prior to the start of the 2010-2011 NBA season, all eyes were focused on one thing: an all but assured Finals meeting between the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers and the newly revamped, star-studded Miami Heat.

Hardly any preseason lists having anything to do with winning included the San Antonio Spurs.  They were mainly mentioned as a declining, first-round-exit team whose championship window was shut and streak of eleven 50-win seasons in jeopardy.

Over halfway though the season, the Spurs hold an eight-game lead (in the loss column) in the always-tough Southwest division, a six-game lead in the Western conference and a three-game lead in the entire league.

Now, their challenge is to maintain that lead, which is more than do-able if they stick with what they have been doing all season: winning.  Here are several reasons why the Spurs will still lead the Western Conference when the playoffs begin in April.
