Anderson Varejao Injury: Updates on Warriors Center’s Back and Recovery

Golden State Warriors big man Anderson Varejao will miss the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro because of a back injury.

Varejao Expected Back by Training Camp Wednesday, July 27 Warriors PR noted Varejao was "diagnosed with a small lower back disc herniation" and will miss the chance to play for his home country in Brazil even though he should be fine by the start of the 2016-17 NBA campaign.

The 12-year veteran continues to be plagued by the injury bug. In four of the past six seasons, he hasn't played in more than 31 games due to a variety of injuries that included face fractures and torn tendons in his ankle.

Varejao played in 31 games with the Cleveland Cavaliers before he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers at the deadline. He was quickly put on waivers and signed with the Warriors for the veteran's minimum.

Varejao added size to a Warriors team that was in need of some. At the time of his acquisition, centers Festus Ezeli and Andrew Bogut were hobbled by injury, and Varejao's presence added another body in the frontcourt.
