New York Knicks forward Kristaps Porzingis received little interest from college basketball teams in his younger years, but the Latvian superstar revealed Friday he was contacted by a few schools in a fairly unorthodox way.
According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, the 2015 No. 4 overall draft pick said some Division II colleges attempted to woo him through Facebook: "It was funny, I received like two or three offers. It was a coach [reaching out to me], writing, 'I want you play for us, we're Division II.'"
Porzingis ultimately played for Baloncesto Sevilla of Liga ACB in Spain instead, and that move certainly paid off, as it landed the 7-footer in the Big Apple.
The Rookie of the Year candidate was a productive player in the Spanish league, but teammate Carmelo Anthony pointed out that he likely would have lit up Division II competition, per Bondy: "In D-II, he probably would've destroyed."
Porzingis has been among the Knicks' lone bright spots this season, averaging 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.
