There's little question that Teuvo Teravainen is very important to the Chicago Blackhawks' future. The team made Teravainen its No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft, and the Finnish native's dazzling skill level has been eye-catching at every level he has played.
But talent alone won't allow him to jump to the NHL and stay for a full season. Teravainen is on the small side at 5'11" and 165 pounds, and when he was called up to play in three late-season games with the Blackhawks, he was not overly impressive.
The Blackhawks see Teravainen as a No. 2 center in their organization behind Jonathan Toews, but he is not necessarily going to make the team in 2014-15.
That is not a bad thing. Teravainen, 19, has played with Jokerit in Europe the last three seasons, and he is still not familiar with the North American game.
General manager Stan Bowman realizes this, and he made a move in the offseason that will allow the Blackhawks to let Teravainen play a full season with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League in order to prepare his game for the hard-hitting rigors of the NHL.
