While much of New England may be focused on the Red Sox’ World Series run and the Patriots’ offensive struggles, the Boston Bruins are quietly off to a solid 7-2-0 start to the 2013-2014 season. They have used the abundance of off-days on the schedule to their advantage, allowing for consistent play from many players on the roster.
With a squad as fortified as the Bruins happen to be, the regular season is largely a dress rehearsal for the postseason. This team will be judged on how they have improved since their ultimate demise in the 2013 Stanley Cup Final.
For this season, the Bruins will need one player in particular to take the next step in his development. That player is Dougie Hamilton, the ninth pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft.
The case could be made that Hamilton has been a slight disappointment since he cracked the Bruins' roster last season. He has amassed a total of 18 points in 49 career games (three points in seven playoff contests). Eventually, he will need to double that scoring rate if he is to live up to the lofty expectations set for him upon his top-10 selection.
