It wasn't exactly pretty, nor was it the type of goal you might label "Ovechkin-like." Effective it was, and that's all that matters to the Washington Capitals.
After the Rangers tied Game 2 at two goals apiece five minutes earlier in the third period, Brad Richards took an ill-advised holding penalty at 12:29 in the stanza, giving Washington the man advantage.
Off the draw in the Rangers' end, center Nicklas Backstrom won the faceoff back to Ovechkin, who spun and skated to center point and unleashed a wrist shot that beat Henrik Lundqvist. It was the go-ahead goal and the eventual game-winner just four seconds into the power play.
As if that dagger didn't quiet Madison Square Garden enough already, Ovechkin celebrated by skating to center ice, holding an open hand to his ear as if to say, "I can't hear you."
That, after the Ranger crowd serenaded the "Great 8" for almost six full periods of "Ovi Sucks, Ovi Sucks."
Apparently, he who laughs last laughs the loudest.
