Washington Capitals: Is Mathieu Perreault the Answer at 2nd-Line Center?

On Monday December 6 the Washington Capitals recalled Mathieu Perreault from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, marking the fourth time that the NHL club has recalled the young centerman.

Perreault, 22, made an impact in Monday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, scoring two goals. Perreault’s call-up seems to be an audition of sorts, as the Capitals are looking to fill the second-line center position.  The team has struggled to find someone to consistently fill that slot for most of this season.

Perreault has delivered in his four call-ups, the problem is that he delivers early in the process and has trouble maintaining his scoring pace as he plays in more games.

In the four call-up games he has played, he has three goals and four assists. In his 21 other NHL games, he has a total of six points.

Washington Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau was happy with what he saw from Perreault on Monday, saying, "If some of the other forwards played with as much energy as him we wouldn't have been in the situation we were in."
