Washington Capitals Brooks Laich Nominated for Sportsman of the Year Award

Writer Michael Farber has nominated Washington Capitals forward Brooks Laich for Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year award.

The reason for the nomination is not due to the fact that Laich did something extraordinary, but because he did something very ordinary, he changed a tire.

On the surface the idea that a person is special for changing a tire may seem a little silly, until the circumstances behind the tire change are detailed.

Laich was driving home after the Capitals fell to the Montreal Canadiens in Game 7 of their first-round playoff series, when he spotted a disabled car on the Roosevelt Bridge. Laich, pulled over to help the stranded motorist.

The Capitals had held a 3-1 lead in the series and looked destined to move on to round two, but Montreal overcame the two-game deficit to beat the Capitals on their home ice.

Laich was the Capitals only goal scorer in the decisive game and here he was, in his game day suit, stopping to assist two Caps fans that had been at the game.
