Washington Capitals: 2011 Season Could Be Make or Break for Club

The Washington Capitals seem to be content to make another run in the NHL’s Southeast Division with essentially the same team as last year.

Almost all the players on the hockey club that will take the ice on Friday for the Caps season opener against the Atlanta Thrashers played for the Caps or their AHL affiliate last season.

Only three players did not spend time with the Capitals or the Hershey Bears last season.  New to the Capitals are Marcus Johansson, the team’s 2009 first-round draft, D.J. King, acquired via trade with the St. Louis Blues, and Matt Hendricks, who played with the Colorado Avalanche last season.

Capitals general manager George McPhee had this to say about his team’s lineup: “We came up with this plan years ago, and fortunately ownership stood by it. We’re starting Friday night with 11 of our own first round picks in the lineup. The league average is four, the closest team to us has seven.”
