Tomas Hertl Injury: Updates on Sharks Star’s Knee and Return

Tomas Hertl was enjoying a fantastic rookie season for the San Jose Sharks prior to being knocked out of action on Dec. 19. Unfortunately for the Czech phenom and his team, however, he is potentially done for the remainder of the 2013-14 NHL campaign.

According to Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com, Hertl suffered damage to the PCL and MCL in his right knee, and after undergoing surgery he could miss between six and nine months.

The injury occurred when Los Angeles Kings forward and Team USA Olympic member Dustin Brown collided with Hertl. A knee-on-knee hit transpired, and Hertl was forced to leave the game. He hasn't played since, and he may not be a part of the Sharks' run at a Stanley Cup this season either.    

Although the Sharks have yet to release a timetable for his return, a former NHL trainer shed some light on what to potentially expect, per Kurz.

"A PCL is about as big around as your pinkie," said the trainer, who has not treated Hertl. "Let's say a quarter of the PCL was torn, and they went in and cleaned up the fibers, and stuff like that. Well, then it won't be six months. It will probably be three month ...
