The Edmonton Oilers have tabbed Todd McLellan as their next head coach.
The team confirmed the news on Tuesday:
Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli heaped praise upon McLellan, per Sportsnet: "Todd's one of the top coaches in the league. His work ethic is tremendous."
The Oilers added more comments from Chiarelli: "He's the guy we wanted and I wanted to get on that in a hurry".
McLellan talked about the sort of player he is looking for with his new team, per the Oilers: "I want young players who are craving to win... Your gut tells you when it's right."
McLellan spent the last seven years with the San Jose Sharks. Although his teams were extremely successful during the regular season, his tenure will likely be remembered for the Sharks' infamous postseason flameouts.
Despite posting a .637 average points percentage between 2008 and 2015, San Jose made it no further than the conference finals. The franchise reached its playoff nadir in 2014, squandering a 3-0 series lead in the first round against the Los Angeles Kings.
Still, few would argue with McLellan's coach ...
