The NHL’s Top Feeders: Peterborough Petes

The Peterborough Petes are the oldest junior hockey team in the Canadian Hockey League. They have been lacing them up for the past 54 years and counting.

The Petes started out as a junior team for the Montreal Canadiens, known then as the TPT Petes. The TPT Petes, or Toronto Peterborough Transport Petes, were good off the hop. They recorded their first championship three years after conception.

The Peterborough Petes came soon after, but never managed to win a championship in the 1960s. However, the 1970s and '80s ushered in exciting times for the Petes as they won nine OHL titles, including three consecutive from '72-'74 and '78-'80. They also won their first and only Memorial Cup in 1979.

The Petes have not managed to recapture their successes to the same extent they had in the '70s and '80s, but they have won three more titles since 1989.

The Petes have won the most championships in the OHL, and they have also sent more players to the NHL then any other team in Canada. They currently have two players drafted this year (Austin Watson, and Ryan Spooner), and one potential top-three pick next year.
