The New Jersey Devils' first preseason game of the 2013-14 season is in the books, and several players looking to earn a spot on the final roster may have gained some ground.

The Devils defeated the New York Rangers 2-1 on Monday night, but the score does not matter much in the preseason. Player performances do.

Obviously, with training camp barely a week old, nothing is set in stone yet, but it is never too early to make a good impression.

Playing well in practices and scrimmages goes a long way, but the preseason games are where young players really earn their places in their organizations.
