The Tampa Bay Lightning announced today that they have re-signed right wing Steve Downie to a two-year contract. The deal will see him earn $3,700,000 in that time span.
Downie, 23, played in 79 games last season, tallying 22 goals, 46 points, and 208 penalty minutes. Those numbers made him the first player since Theo Fleury in 2001-02 to post at least 20 goals and 200 penalty minutes in one season. His plus/minus (+14) and shooting percentage (19.00) were also quite impressive.
The 5'11'', 200 pound power forward spent time on the first line last season; look for him to continue that trend in the fall.
The Newmarket, Ontario native was originally selected 29th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. Between the Lightning and the Flyers, Downie has played 140 career NHL games, registering 31 goals and 64 points.
Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman commented on the signing:
“We are pleased to get Steve under contract today. We look forward to him building on the success he had last season and becoming an even bigger part of the team.”
