Steve Downie Keeps His Talents in Tampa, Re-Signs for Two Years

RFA Steve Downie has re-signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He will be making $3.7 million over two years.

The power forward opened eyes last season when he had an offensive outburst, scoring 22 goals and amassing 46 points in 79 games. Not afraid to drop the gloves, Downie also had 208 PIM last season.

Downie had gone through a lull over the past few seasons. In Philadelphia, he was nothing but a goon who scored every now and then. However, he was drafted 29th overall in 2005 for a reason: the kid has skill.

Only 23, Downie turned his career around. He went from being a goon and slashing referees in Philadelphia and the minors to scoring down in Tampa. He has even been promoted to a line featuring star teammates Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis.

Expect Steve Downie to impress this season. Don't be surprised if he scores 30-plus goals playing a full season on a line with Stamkos and St. Louis.
