Stanley Cups Don’t Equal Greatness

Roberto Luongo has been criticized for many things throughout his career, most notably, for the fact that he has never won anything in the NHL.  He has zero Stanley Cups, and only two playoff series wins in nine NHL seasons.  As a pure statement, the fact that he has never won anything is undeniable; however, as a criticism of his goaltending ability and as a measure of greatness, it is completely unjust.

The criticism: “he has never won anything,” is a cliché that spans all of sport; whether it is football, basketball, or hockey, fans and commentators throw it around like a baseball and stigmatize players when they can’t come up with a deeper thought.  But, this cliche is completely wrong headed as a criticism and is not an appropriate measure of talent—not only for Luongo, but all players.

Winning in the NHL, and more specifically, the playoffs, is a function of many things.  Obviously, this includes the performance of the goalie; however, the goalie is only one player.
