The Washington Capitals came out and played one of their best first periods of the season but it was Pittsburgh and Sidney Crosby that would tally the only goal of the first period. Crosby standing all alone to the right of Caps goalie Michael Neuvirth chipped it past Neuvirth to put the Pens up 1-0 just 3:21 into the game.
Crosby extended his points scoring streak to 23 games with the goal.
Ovechkin came out physical dropping several big hits including one on fellow Russian rival Evgeni Malkin.
Pens net minder Marc-Andre Fleury continued his stellar play stopping all 12 Washington shots. Washington outshot Pittsburgh 12-6 in the first period.
The Caps would pepper Fleury at times as he would come up big with the glove on many Caps shots, Washington continued it struggles on the power play going 0-2 and failing to convert a five on three. The Caps would get a 1:12 advantage with two men before Brooks Laich would get caught for interference ending the power play.
