The Los Angeles Kings became the second team to be eliminated from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Friday night, dropping a 6-3 decision at home to the San Jose Sharks to lose their first round series 4-1.

The Kings put up a good fight. After falling behind 3-0 in the first period, they dominated the second with three goals of their own, setting up a showdown in the final frame.

Despite two crushing playoff losses to Los Angeles in recent years, San Jose did not allow history to repeat itself. The second goal of the night by rookie Joonas Donskoi at 3:58 of the third period proved to be the game-winner, then Joe Pavelski and Melker Karlsson added insurance markers to secure the win in the game and the series.

For the favored Kings, the loss will lead to plenty of soul-searching this summer after the team staged a nice regular-season rebound following a playoff miss in 2015. Most notably, veteran Vincent Lecavalier is expected to retire and winger Milan Lucic, who was limited to three assists in the series, is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
