Semyon Varlamov Returns to Capitals: Does He Need a Change To Save His Career?

Semyon Varlamov is set to return to the Washington Capitals bench as the backup goalie for tonight’s game against the New York Islanders. Varlamov is coming back from a groin injury that he suffered prior to the Capitals season opener.

"Everything is fine with me now," Varlamov said Wednesday. "I will be the backup. And then, we'll see. If they want me to play, I will play because I am ready. I was through full practices, and it all feels alright."

Michal Neuvirth has been the netminder for the 2-1 Caps to start the season. During those games, Neuvirth has posted a save percentage of .920 to go along with a goals against average of 2.62. Neuvirth’s numbers indicate that he will most likely remain the starting goaltender until he falters between the pipes.

Varlamov is only 22 years of age, and yet he has suffered a long list of injuries during his relatively short hockey career. Since 2008 he has had five injuries.

In 2008, he missed the world championship due to a broken ankle. During the 2009 season, he encountered a preseason groin injury that cost him regular-season ice time.
