Sean Avery Out Rest of New York Rangers’ Season, Possibly Playoffs As Well

According to Steve Zipay of Newsday, Rangers head coach John Tortorella said it was doubtful that forward Sean Avery would play in the team’s final two games against the Flyers, and it is unclear if Avery could even play if they made the playoffs.

Avery has been out for nearly two weeks now after he injured his knee in a game against the Maple Leafs.

He underwent a treatment of platelet-rich plasma therapy last week, which was supposed to speed up recovery time, and then underwent another such treatment this past Tuesday. Avery said it’s too soon to tell if the treatment has had the desired effect.

As much as the Rangers need Avery back in the lineup, at this point the Rangers don’t need a bunch of hobbled players stalking around the ice, so it would probably be best to wait until the playoffs instead of rushing him back.

If the Rangers drop the first game to the Flyers, though, they are going to be tempted to push him back, as these Rangers-Flyers games can get pretty physical.
