Ryan McDonagh, Rangers Prospect, Becomes Sole Captain at UW

According to a press release from the University of Wisconsin Badgers, Rangers defensive prospect Ryan McDonagh, who served as one of three tri-captains this season, will return to the Badgers next year as the team’s sole captain.

McDonagh, who is a junior this year, served as a tri-captain along with forwards Blake Geoffrion and Ben Street, who are both graduating. There was some thought that McDonagh, who isn’t supposed to graduate for another year, should or could turn pro, but he’s decided to stay in Wisconsin for another season.

Maybe he should be turning pro, but with the other two captains leaving and the team having lost in the Frozen Four final but expected to be competitive enough to go for  it again next year there are certainly reasons for him to stay. Still just 20 years old, it won’t kill him to finish his degree.

His teammate and former Rangers prospect Derek Stepan will become an assistant captain next season.
