The 2013 NHL lockout had several repercussions—the least of which wasn't the salary cap ceiling sinking to $64.3 million for at least the 2014 season.
Teams were allowed compliance buyouts to get under the new limit, and squads like the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning used this option to try to get out of cap hell.
Then free agency hit and all caution seemed to go out the window. Teams were right back to shelling out ridiculous big-money, long-term contracts like the ceiling was doubling instead of falling a few million. While it's believed that the cap will go back up after 2014, that doesn't make the situations certain teams put themselves in for the entire season any less serious.
Following a noisy first few weeks of the NHL offseason, here's how teams are sitting in regard to the salary cap.
