Philadelphia Flyers Training Camp News and Notes: Day 1

Well, the hockey season is drawing closer as NHL teams, including the Philadelphia Flyers, opened training camp on Saturday.

For the first time, I was in attendance at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J. Before we move into notes from camp, let me say that the turnout was outstanding. It's being reported that there were more than 1,800 fans, figures larger than last year's crowd.

Sure, the Flyers are coming off a Stanley Cup appearance, and there's a lot of buzz surrounding the team, but it shows how faithful the fans truly are. Nearly 2,000 fans took time out of their busy days to watch a bunch of guys practice.

That says a lot.

Now, let's move into actual camp-related news.

— Nikolai Zherdev was rather impressive as he was really fast with confidence on the puck in his first practice with the team. As he arrived one day before the start of camp, no one knew what kind of shape Zherdev was in. Well, he was ready to go.
