Philadelphia Flyers Sign Blair Betts to Contract Extension

When the Flyers invited him to training camp on a professional tryout, Blair Betts had no guaranteed roster spot. With hard work and impressive play in the preseason, Philadelphia's general manager, Paul Holmgren, compensated the center with a one-year contract for the 2009-10 season.

Despite dislocating his shoulder twice and only suiting up for 39 games, Betts has been one of the most important players on the Flyers. His hard work and strong defensive prowess has paid dividends as the Flyers rewarded him with a two-year, $1.4 million contract extension.

The deal is a one-way contract that will pay the 29-year-old a salary of $700,000 per season, which is also the same number that counts against the cap. Betts will see a $150,000 raise from his $550,000 made in his first season in the orange 'n' black.

Betts has been perhaps the most valuable player on the roster, as they have won far more games than they lost when he's in the lineup. The Flyers' record when Betts is in the lineup is 25-12-2, and when he's not playing, the Flyers are 5-13-1.
