With a strong defensive performance, the Pittsburgh Penguins evened their first-round playoff series with the New York Rangers with a 4-3 win on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

A tentative start led to a 1-0 lead for the Rangers after 20 minutes on just their third shot of the game. Despite once again taking a long list of penalties, Pittsburgh came back in the second period thanks to a power-play goal from Brandon Sutter, then two goals from captain Sidney Crosby in the span of 3:39 before the middle frame was complete.

The Penguins took that 3-1 lead into the second intermission and played a steady third period.

Pittsburgh limited the Rangers to just one power-play goal on seven opportunities and played a tight defensive game despite being undermanned on the blue line due to injuries to Christian Ehrhoff and Derrick Pouliot.

The win is the Penguins' first against the Rangers in five playoff games.

With the series tied at 1-1, Game 3 will go Monday in Pittsburgh.
