NHL Rumors October 11: Tomas Kaberle, Joe Thornton and More

Brian Burke is not going to ask Tomas Kaberle to waive his no trade clause. He has stated that if nothing else the Leafs get $4.25 million in cap space, so he is not going away for nothing. If Kaberle asks to be dealt it would be a different story but Burke likes his team to get together early in the year. He is not that big of a trade deadline guy.

Makes perfect sense to me. Burke has stated repeatedly he will not ask Kaberle to waive his NTC. I expect him to attempt to sign Kaberle to an extension.

Joe Thornton is about to get a contract extension. This is expected to occur in the next several weeks.

I don't find this one bit surprising, disappointing yes but not surprising. The San Jose Sharks love keeping the star players they have on their rosters. I cannot remember the last time a star player this team to play with another NHL team.

The key thing to note here is that this makes Brad Richards the only star centre in next year's free agency. Interestingly enough, with the Stars internal budgets and lack of an owner (Joe Nieuwendyk says they will know who the owner is by mid-season so he can negotiate with Richards) Richards may b ...
