On Thursday morning, the NHL announced that it will partner with HBO in a new venture, giving fans in-depth access to some of the biggest stars in the game.

HBO's series 24/7 will focus on the daily build-up surrounding the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins before the Bridgestone Winter Classic, being held at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field this year.

The series, titled 24/7 Penguins/Capitals Road to the Winter Classic, will be the first time HBO films two teams and also the first time the network will document teams during their regular seasons.

Obviously, the central figures in the project will be Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin, but this platform should open the eyes of casual hockey fans to the other superstars on both rosters.

HBO will reportedly begin filming in mid-November, and the show will run all the way through the Winter Classic with an in-depth look at everything behind the scenes. The show will premiere Dec. 15 in prime time on HBO.
