NHL Colorado Avalanche Trade Scott Hannan To Washington Capitals

In their second trade in as many days, the Colorado Avalanche have traded defenseman Scott Hannan to the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Thomas Fleischmann.

The Avalanche's acquisition of Matt Hunwick gave them nine NHL defenseman, so it's not a surprise they traded one for a forward.

It's also not a surprise that the defenseman to go was Scott Hannan.

Hannan was a solid defenseman for the Avalanche in his three plus seasons with the club, but never really lived up to his four year, 18 million dollar contract. At age 32, with a contract expiring at the end of the season, he was unsurprisingly the odd man out.

For a Washington team expected to compete for the Stanley Cup, Hannan will help to patch up their average defense group.

Fleischmann, 26, provided good scoring depth for the Capitals last season, scoring 51 points in 69 games. But like every other player the Avalanche have acquired recently, Fleischmann has struggled in 2010-2011, scoring only 10 points in 23 games.
