NHL Buzz: The Latest on Marc Staal, Sheldon Souray, New Jersey Devils, and More

Multiple reports are suggesting Marc Staal and the Rangers are very close on a contract extension. Some say the deal could get done tonight.

My take: The sooner this gets done the faster both sides can move on and get ready for the season.


Oilers GM Steve Tambellini has told Sheldon Souray not to report to training camp and to stand by for further orders. In the meantime, the Oilers are still shopping Sheldon Souray as they don't want him anywhere near anyone in the organization.

My take: The funny thing about all of this is Sheldon Souray is a great guy. If you talk to any of his teammates they would tell you that. On a side note, the Oilers would have to take on at least some salary in order to move Souray.


In order for the Devils to get under the cap and have a little bit of breathing room they will need to clear $4 or $5 million in cap space. Bob McKenzie of TSN is reporting that they are shopping both Colin White and Bryce Salvador on the blueline; however, Colin White does have a no-trade clause.
