The Montreal Canadiens have announced that they have signed veteran forward Jeff Halpern to a one-year deal reportedly worth $550,000.

My take: I love the signing, Halpern is a great penalty killer with some offensive upside, $550,000 is a bargain for him.

The Phoenix Coyotes have invited Kyle Wellwood to camp on a tryout basis.

My take: I love the training camp invites. If Wellwood plays well he gets a contract. If not, no harm is done.



St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong has told members of the St. Louis media that Eric Brewer will remain as the teams captain.

My take: I think he should remain as captain. Brewer is a great team guy and is well respected around the Blues organization.

Andy Strickland of Hockeybuzz.com is reporting that the Rangers have expressed interest in UFA forward Ruslan Fedotenko and could invite him to training camp on a tryout basis.

My take: I think he would be a good fit there. Like I said above, tryouts are low-risk moves which could turn out to payoff.
