NHL Award Show: Breaking Down The Calder Odds

The Calder Memorial Trophy. Handed out to the NHL's Rookie of the year. Players are only eligible to recieve this award in the first year of the career and only one can win, making it one of the hardest trophies in hockey to get your name on. It takes quite a season for ones name to be plaqued on this piece of hardware. Teemu's 76 goals or Ovechkins 106point rookie campaign, are just a few examples of what it can take to earn this honor. However, nothing crazy like the above two will be necesary this year. In 2010, it could be a 6'8" Defenceman, who to date has tallied 46points (11G, 35A) and has had a very solid season. Or a speedy center, who right now has 54points (23G, 31A) and is slowly but surely becoming the face of his franchise. Or it could be a netminder who to date, has posted 34wins and is forming into his teams new #1 guy. Here's some pro's and con's for all of the above.Begin Slideshow
