NHL All-Star Game: Canes Eric Staal and Wings Nick Lidstrom Named Captains

As the end of the month is just around the corner, so is the All-Star Game.

Today, the captains of the two sides were named.

Many thought Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin or Jonathan Toews were going to be named as possible captains (well, two out of three would be).

As of today, however, Carolina's Eric Staal and Detroit's Nick Lidstrom have been named the captains of the two All-Star Team's. Hardly a shock.

Eric Staal is representing the Hurricane's, who will be hosting the All-Star Game at the RBC Center.

Staal was named captain of the Canes in January 2010, replacing Rod Brind'Amour

The captain of the other team is also a no-brainer.

Nick Lidstrom, who has been captain of the Detroit Red Wings for five years, will have the honor of leading Staal's opposing side.

Lidstrom has only been captain in such a short period of time due to the fact of playing with Steve Yzerman, who led the Wings as captain for 20 years. Lidstrom played with Yzerman for 18 of those years.

Staal is currently 11th in league scoring (46) and eighth for goals (22).
