New York Rangers: The Haunting of Two Goals a Game

Forget about the point that the New York Rangers managed to get in their shootout loss to the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday night.

Though every single point is precious in today’s National Hockey League, the bigger story was the fact that the Rangers, who took a total of 48 shots-on-goal, had once again failed to score more than two goals in a game.

This inability to score has doomed the Rangers through the first 32 games of the 2009-10 season. The Rangers have scored two goals or fewer for the 16th time in their last 20 games.

The Blueshirts have now lost seven of their last eight games and are tied with the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders for third place in the Atlantic Division and tied for ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points.

How can a team manage to take a total of 48 shots and not win the game? If you're the Rangers, it's pretty easy actually.

Though the Rangers led in shots for the entire game against the Thrashers, they never had the lead.
