New York Rangers: Making a Case for Vezina Candidate Henrik Lundqvist

In one of the most extraordinary comebacks of the NHL season, the New York Rangers have defeated the Boston Bruins 5-3, scoring five unanswered goals to help cement their 2011 NHL playoff chances.

After falling behind 3-0 through the first period and a half, Vinny Prospal scored two goals in the second period, and Brandon Dubinsky and Michael Sauer scored 51 seconds apart late in the third to cap a frantic comeback by the Broadway Blueshirts.

But the game did more than just show off the Rangers grit, determination, and work ethic. It also put two of the best goalies in the League on display against one another.

Henrik Lundqvist (NYR) and Tim Thomas (BOS) are both vying for this year’s Vezina Trophy. Thomas won the award in 2009, and though Lundqvist has been nominated three times (2006, 2007, 2008), he has never won.

Both goalies are having tremendous seasons. Factoring in tonight’s game, Thomas sits first in the league in both save percentage (.938%) and goals against average (2.02); Lundqvist is at fifth in SV% (.923) and sixth in GAA (2.27).
