Montreal’s Max Pacioretty Misses 2 Penalty Shots in 1 Game

Montreal Canadiens left winger Max Pacioretty had an incredible night Thursday, becoming the first player in NHL history to miss two penalty shots in the same game and the first to attempt multiple penalty shots in the same period.

What made the performance so amazing was that Pacioretty managed to notch a hat trick despite being stifled by Vancouver's Roberto Luongo on both penalty shots.

Pacioretty's penalty-shot opportunities were separated by less than two minutes of game time, as he became just the second player in NHL history to even try two penalty shots in the same contest.

The first player was Dallas Stars forward Erik Cole, who made one of his two tries as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes in a February 2005 game.

Given the rarity of penalty shots, Pacioretty's combination of a hat trick and two missed penalty shots in the same game should stand for quite some time as his accomplishment alone. Records may be meant to be broken, but this one looks nearly untouchable.
