Maple Leafs’ Brian Burke Signs College Free Agent Brayden Irwin

Brian Burke would never be accused of sitting around. Following recent speculation the Burke and the Maple Leafs were courting Norwegian free agent Mats Zuccarello Aasen, 23-year-old college free agent Brayden Irwin today signed a two-year entry-level deal with the club.

The 6'5" Toronto native will finish the season with the Leafs then report to training camp in the fall.

Irwin, a former teammate of current Toronto Maple Leaf Viktor Stalberg, just finished his fourth season with the University of Vermont Catamounts where he led the team in several categories including goals, assists, power play goals, and penalty minutes.

Irwin will speak to the media for the first time in Toronto after the morning skate today and is expected to be very excited to be playing for his hometown Leafs.

This signing adds yet more depth at the center position for the Leafs which would make one ask, is Burke trying to corner the market on centers?

The Leafs currently have six active centers on the team. With Primeau, Hanson Lundmark, and Mitchell all eligible for free agency this off season, it appears that Irwin will certainly get a fair sh ...
