Ilya Kovalchuk Earns the Hat Trick Emphatically, Ovechkin Nets OT Winner

Last night, two of Russia's super-snipers strutted their stuff in big wins for each of their respective clubs.

Alexander Ovechkin once again scored an overtime goal to help defeat the divisional rival Tampa Bay Lightning while Ilya Kovalchuk helped the Devils dominate the New York Islanders by providing a hat trick.

For Ovechkin, it's becoming a habit to score overtime goals. This time, however, it wasn't a patented bullet that ended it but a bit of scoring touch.



The Capitals now have moved back into the eighth and final playoff position and are only two points behind the Florida Panthers, who are the Southeast Division leaders.

For Kovalchuk, he was urged earlier in the season to shoot more and that is precisely what he is doing. Two of his goals last night were outright bullets—shots that were almost shocking to witness live in the arena. The sheer velocity and accuracy of his second and third goals were stunning.
