Ilya Kovalchuk Chaos: Reported Numbers, NHL Decision Coming Wednesday

The New Jersey Devils sent an amended contract to the NHL for review last week, with reports saying the 17-year, $102 million contract had been "edited" to a 15-year, $100 million deal.

On Tuesday, Sportnet's Nick Kypreos tweeted the annual salaries in the new deal, however it appears to be dramatically different than the original deal. Here are the annual salaries reported by Sportsnet:

2010: $6 million 2011: $6 million 2012: $11 million 2013: $11.3 million 2014: $11.3 million 2015: $11.6 million 2016: $11.8 million 2017: $10 million 2018: $7 million 2019: $4 million 2020: $1 million 2021: $1 million 2022: $1 million 2023: $3 million 2024: $4 million  

The immediate reaction is that the middle seasons, with annual salaries of over $11M each, are still ridiculously high.

However, the escalating amounts in the final two seasons make a late buyout seem less likely, but the $1M years could still be a sticking point.

New Jersey has deals they will need to make once a deal is approved, so the longer the NHL waits to make a decision, the more intrigue will surround the trade market late in the summer.
