Philadelphia 2, Washington 0 (Washington leads series 3-2)
The Philadelphia Flyers stayed alive in their Eastern Conference first-round series with the Washington Capitals on Friday thanks to a terrific performance in goal from Michal Neuvirth.
Neuvirth, who relieved Steve Mason in net after Game 3, made 44 saves against the tenacious Capitals attack in Game 5 at the Verizon Center.
The Flyers barely created anything on offense, but they found a way to put the puck in the back of the net. Ryan White opened the scoring in the second period, when he deflected a shot off the body of Taylor Chorney and past Braden Holtby.
After weathering the furious attacking storm of the Capitals, Philadelphia finished off its second victory of the series as Chris VandeVelde placed the puck into an empty net with 30 seconds remaining.
Neuvirth faced constant pressure throughout the 60 minutes at the Verizon Center. The Flyers sent just 11 shots in the direction of Holtby.
The two teams will renew the series on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
