Arron Asham has signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers' in-state rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The free-agent deal is worth $700,000.
Earlier in the offseason, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren inked Daniel Carcillo to a one-year deal worth $1.075 million. Holmgren also spent $3.3 million on noted fighter Jody Shelley. Shelley's deal is for three years.
Arron Asham was a player that the Flyers used during their entire Stanley Cup run, playing in 23 games and totaling seven points.
Carcillo was a decided liability during the playoffs, averaging two minutes in penalties in every game he played. Shelley has played a total of seven playoff games in his career.
Asham was a grinder who could play on every line, contributing offense, defense as well as fighting when called upon. Carcillo, while showing some talent for offense was much more prone to the bad, emotional penalty.
Holmgren could have signed Shelley and allowed Carcillo to walk. Had he done that, he would have had $300,000 extra against the cap, a more talented player on the ice as well as his heavyweight fighter.
