Edmonton Oilers goaltender Ben Scrivens stopped 59 shots in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the San Jose Sharks to set a new expansion era record for most saves in a regular-season shutout.
He easily bested the previous record of 54 saves, set by Phoenix's Mike Smith in an April 2012 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Retired legend Dominik Hasek set the postseason record in 1994, with 70 saves for the Sabres in a 1-0 quadruple-overtime win over the New Jersey Devils.
Scrivens, who was traded from the Los Angeles Kings to the Oilers on Jan. 15, has allowed just seven goals in four games with his new team, posting a 2-2-0 record with a .955 save percentage and 1.76 goals against average.
He's been progressively better in each start for Edmonton, after surrendering four goals to the Minnesota Wild on Jan. 16 in his Oilers debut.
Moving from a contender to an also-ran is always tough, but Scrivens has an increased role to soften the blow. He was stuck behind Jonathan Quick in Los Angeles, and he spent most of the 2012-13 campaign as James Reimer's backup in Toronto.
